According to Nielson’s “The Social Media Report,” Facebook is now the most-used website on the internet[1]. The social networking site trounced the competition with American internet users dedicating a total of 53.5 billion minutes each month on the site, compared to second-place Yahoo (17.2 billion minutes), third-place Google (12.5 billion) and third-place YouTube (9.1 billion). Blog platform Tumblr did not rank in the top three, but did receive recognition for increasing its audience 300 percent within a year.
Other interesting statistics in the report included:
- 62 percent of Facebook page views are by women
- Men spend more time watching videos online than women (247 million minutes vs. 226 million minutes) but women watch a higher number of videos
- Men are more likely to visit LinkedIn or Wikipedia than Facebook
- 37 percent of users “consume” social media by phone versus 97 percent who use their PCs
- 70 percent of adult social networkers also shop online and are 12 percent more likely to shop and buy than the “average adult internet user”[2]
